Dochula

Dochula is a stunning mountain pass located at an altitude of 3,100 meters (10,171 feet) on the road between Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, and the town of Punakha. It is one of the most picturesque locations in Bhutan, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the eastern Himalayas. On clear days, visitors can witness the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayan range, including some of the highest mountains in Bhutan. The serene environment and cool mountain air make it a favorite stop for travelers heading to or from Punakha.

The Dochula Pass is also famous for the 108 memorial chortens (stupas) known as the Druk Wangyal Chortens. These were built by Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck in honor of Bhutanese soldiers who lost their lives during military operations in 2003. The chortens, arranged in concentric circles, create a visually striking and spiritually significant site. The pass is not only a place of remembrance but also a symbol of peace, unity, and the strength of the Bhutanese people.

In addition to its natural beauty and historical significance, Dochula is home to the annual Dochula Druk Wangyel Festival, which celebrates Bhutan’s military victory and showcases traditional cultural performances, including masked dances and folk songs. The Dochula Pass thus serves as a unique blend of spirituality, history, and culture, making it a must-visit destination for those exploring Bhutan.
